A dream or not?

What if someone you don’t know came to tell you that everything you see, touch, smell, hear and taste is an illusion. You probably would think the same way as I think, “This person is completely insane”. While reading I inside, I outside, Descartes said that “Those thing we perceive, and those events that appear to happen, could only be incidents within a dream”.

I reasoned this statement and I think that I can’t be sure about nothing. There is no way to prove or deny Descartes thought. But what I’m arguing about his quote is what difference would it make if everything is a dream or not? I would live my life the exact same way because if and only if is “proven” to be right, I will still be in my eternal dream and I can’t do nothing about it. As Savater says, “To be always dreaming would be the same as never to dream”. If we were always dreaming, we wouldn’t know what reality really is. If this was the case, we have never experience pure reality. So it doesn’t make a difference, a dream or not a dream, we exist in some way that is for sure.

In conclusion I don’t think we have to worry about this, in fact, if everything is a dream, why would I care in writing this blog, right?

  1. Exactly, I totally agree with this post because it is true that we can't be living ourlives asking ourselves this kind of questions that will never make a difference. Even if we exist or not we need to keep going with our lives. We can't stop our lives just by asking ourselves this kind of questions. I also want to say that just imagine that descartes is correct and we are just illusions, would you stop eating or would you stop working? the answer is NO because you need to keep going with your life in order to survive and not suffer. I also want to comment that it is very hard that we are all just dreaming because we suffer and brains don't have the nervous system we have in order to feel when we get hurt

  2. yes, I’m totally agree with you Erick because I don’t know why we keep questioning if we are dreaming all the time, any way we are living our life dreaming or not dreaming that’s our life, we don’t know it our life it’s just an illusion or not the real truth that we know and that comfort us is that we exist, don’t you think so?, living our life as it comes to us.

  3. Great post Erick, I couldn't agree with you more. This is what I am trying to say in class every day, except you found better words for it. It's not that we're denying the possibility of it all being an illusion, it's just that its completely pointless to waste our time debating on the matter. I mean, if somebody said: "Hey, what if tomorrow you wake up and realize that the past 3 yearsof your life were just a dream and you're actually still 15 years old?" Ok, that I could waste time thinking about, but we're talking about our whole lives here, which is way different. If i woke up tomorrow and realized that I'm still 15 then i would have 15 years worth of memory, but if my whole life was a dream, what difference would it make?
